How to Enhance Your Mastectomy Recovery

How to Enhance Your Mastectomy Recovery

Recovering from a mastectomy usually takes a few weeks — and longer if you’re having breast reconstruction, too. Fortunately, implementing a few tips can make this time easier and more comfortable for you.

As an expert in breast surgery, including mastectomy, Dr. Elvira Klause knows what helps people during their recovery. When you visit our team in Laguna Hills, California, we can help you develop a recovery plan.

Here are some of our tips:

Plan for your hospital stay

Most women spend up to a full day in the hospital after a mastectomy, and that might include staying overnight. Dr. Klause can let you know what to expect, but it’s best to plan for at least one night so we can monitor your recovery immediately after surgery.

If you’re getting a mastectomy with breast reconstruction, your hospital stay will generally be longer. Again, our team can let you know what to expect regarding your hospital stay.

Consider bringing a book or headphones to keep yourself occupied as you recover in the hospital.

Prioritize your comfort and hygiene

Bring comfy clothes and tops that button or tie in the front. You don’t want to have to pull anything over your head to get dressed in the early days after your surgery.

Some women bring their own pillows to the hospital for added comfort.

Showering is off-limits right after a mastectomy. Personal wipes and dry shampoo can help you feel your best before you can take a shower.

Prep your home

Make a plan to have your prescriptions ready at home. That often means having the person who drives you home stop by the pharmacy so you can fill your prescription.

Freeze some healthy meals or plan to have food delivered so you have easy options in the first few days after coming home.

Move anything you regularly use in the kitchen and bathroom to a lower shelf so you won’t need to reach above your head.

Be ready to manage your drain

Dr. Klause might place a drain to manage excess fluid after your surgery. We provide specific instructions about how to empty that drain, which you must do twice daily. Many women say wearing a front-opening sweater with pockets or a fanny pack makes it easier to manage the drain tubes.

If someone will be helping you with your drain, let us know so we can also provide them with instructions.

These are our general suggestions. For a personalized plan to support your recovery after a mastectomy, call our office at 949-245-6910 or connect with us online today.
